Description

Musical Instrument (Electronic) published 29 years ago:

Planet Phatt - The Swing System (c) 1997 E-mu Systems.

The E-mu Planet Phatt “The Swing System” was a genre-focused ROM-based synthesizer module designed for hip-hop, trip-hop, acid jazz, and swing-influenced electronic music. Developed by E-mu Systems, it was part of the Orbit-derived “Planet” series and used the Proteus-style architecture with 32-voice polyphony, 16-part multitimbrality, and Z-Plane digital filtering. It featured a large ROM soundset optimized for urban and groove-oriented production styles, including basses, drums, keys, and sound effects tailored for rhythmic music creation.

- TRIVIA -

The Planet Phatt was announced at NAMM 1997 as part of E-mu’s expansion of the Orbit concept into genre-specific sound modules.

It is part of a trio of related “Planet” modules: Orbit (dance/techno), Planet Phatt (hip-hop/trip-hop), and Carnaval (Latin).

It offers 32-voice polyphony and 16-part multitimbrality, using the same Proteus-based engine architecture found in other E-mu rack modules.

The module includes hundreds of presets (around 640 total across ROM and user banks) designed for immediate music production.

Its sound library includes iconic 90s elements such as hip-hop basses, synth stabs, drum kits, and FX designed for groove-heavy genres.

It uses E-mu’s Z-Plane filter system, allowing morphing digital filter types beyond standard subtractive synth designs.

The “Swing System” branding reflects its focus on groove-based sequencing and rhythmic feel enhancements.

It expanded on Orbit’s concept by shifting from club/techno toward urban music production (hip-hop and trip-hop).

It includes BEATS mode with MIDI-syncable drum loops, allowing pattern-based performance directly from the module.

Later E-mu systems evolved this concept into the Mo’Phatt and Xtreme Lead Command Station series, which continued the genre-based sound philosophy.
