Description

Motherboard published 35 years ago:

P3239 (c) 1991 Philips Corp.

The Philips P3239 is a highly integrated, proprietary corporate 80386SX low-profile desktop computer engineered and distributed by Philips Electronics around 1991 to 1992. Built to capture the European corporate workstation and financial terminal market, the motherboard drops multi-chip white-label logic layouts to feature a highly customized, low-power OEM system board. The architecture hosts a surface-mounted (PQFP) Intel 80386SX microprocessor operating at synchronous speeds of 16 MHz or 20 MHz, with an adjacent solder pattern or open socket for an optional Intel 80387SX math co-processor. Due to its strict low-profile horizontal spatial constraints, expansion paths are funneled through a central proprietary passive tree riser card containing standard 16-bit ISA slots. Memory handling relies on early high-density 72-pin SIMM sockets supporting up to 16 MB of Fast Page Mode (FPM) DRAM, backed by an integrated onboard IDE storage controller, Western Digital or Cirrus Logic VGA video arrays, and standard floppy subsystem tracking directly embedded onto the main copper PCB layer.

- TRIVIA -

The Death of Philips Computing: The P3239 belongs to the absolute final wave of personal computers entirely developed and badged by Philips Electronics. Facing brutal price-cutting wars from high-volume Taiwanese clone manufacturers and American giants like Compaq, Philips found its corporate desktop division heavily deep in the red, leading to the historic decision to sell their entire PC hardware manufacturing operations to Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) right around the time this specific generation was active.

Seamless "All-On-Board" Layout: While typical 386 white-label systems of 1991 required separate, fragile multi-I/O and video controller add-in cards that frequently loose contact inside the chassis, the Philips P3239 features industrial-grade assembly where the communication ports, full analog VGA outputs, floppy disk interfaces, and IDE storage pathways are routed directly onto a single unified piece of silicon. This severely minimized structural internal cable clutter and maximized airflow inside the extremely tight, flat metal enclosure.
