Synopsis

Picachu – Pocket Monsters is a hack that has almost nothing to do with classic Pokémon, where you train monsters to level up and grow stronger. Here you control Pikachu in a weird forest filled with enemies that barely look like Pokémon—at best you can vaguely spot something like Porygon or Beedrill, but they're poorly represented. The soundtrack is taken from Bonkers and feels like an action/battle scene, which doesn't fit the game at all. Visually, though, it's surprisingly decent for a hack/bootleg of its time, even if Pikachu looks a bit “chubby.” The worst part is the gameplay: movement is slow, the jump feels bad and demands precision, and it's still easy to fall into pits and die. Even with all these flaws, it deserves some recognition as a curiosity and for the technical effort—back then, romhackers had limited knowledge, yet still managed to create a “Pokémon” experience on the SNES.
