Synopsis

Planetary Construction Set is an educational world-building simulation that combines astronomy, planetary science, biology, and physics. Through tutorials and quizzes, players learn about star systems, planetary composition, atmospheres, orbital mechanics, and animal physiology.

The program features two mission modes. In Cadet Missions, players must design a planet that meets specific requirements, balancing factors such as year length, day length, temperature, star type, atmospheric makeup, and orbital distance. In Captain's Missions, players are given an alien species whose home world is no longer habitable and must create a suitable replacement planet. Success requires experimentation, note-taking, and careful adjustment of environmental conditions. After each attempt, the program evaluates the world and highlights any problems, allowing players to refine their design until the ideal habitat is achieved.
