Quest for the Crown
Synopsis
The kingdom of Daventry was once prosperous. King Edward, the Benevolent, ruled with justice over his subordinates: there was neither poverty nor war. The only thing missing was an heir to the throne, but alas, King Edward and his Queen were unable to produce one.
One day, a wizard appeared, promising to cast a spell on the queen that would give her an heir. In exchange, he asked for the Magic Mirror capable of showing the future. Not wanting to part with the mirror, King Edward decided to consult it first. The royal couple saw a valiant young man wearing the king's insignia. Believing that the mirror showed them their future son, they gave in to the sorcerer.
But months later, the queen had still not conceived a child. Worse still, a famine spread across the kingdom of Daventry, since the mirror, which had predicted for generations the right time to bring out the crops, was unable to warn the king of a torrential rain in early autumn which destroyed the entire harvest. After the famine, came the plague which also struck the queen whose health was rapidly deteriorating. Once again, help seemed to be coming - this time in the form of a dwarf who promised to heal the queen in exchange for the king's shield, which has been carried into every battle since and proved the king's victory every time. Desperate, King Edward agreed in order to save his beloved queen. But the dwarf and his medicines were false and the queen died.
News spread to neighboring kingdoms that King Edward no longer possessed his conquering shield and their troops gathered and started war at Daventry. Although Edward was able to repel the invaders, the battles brought desolation to his kingdom which was then a shadow of its former glory.
Many years passed and one day King Edward was riding out on horseback when he heard cries for help. It turned out that they came from a young blonde woman who was being attacked by a pack of wild wolves. After fighting the wild beasts, he invited the beautiful lady to his castle, where she stayed for some time and she and King Edward fell in love.
At last happy times seemed to return to Daventry, for the marriage between King Edward and Princess Dahlia of Cumberland, for that is who she was, was soon announced. But, alas, the day before the wedding, Princess Dahlia stole the keys to the royal treasury from King Edward to steal the magic chest which magically filled to the brim with gold coins no matter how many were taken out. It turned out that Princess Dahlia was not a princess at all, but an old and ugly witch.
Deprived of all magical treasures, Daventry became poor and weak. King Edward summoned his favorite knight, Sir Graham, who bore a striking resemblance to the valiant young man King Edward had seen so many years ago in the magic mirror. Sensing his end near, he promised Sir Graham the kingdom of Daventry, if he could recover the three magical treasures lost to theft and deception...
