Synopsis

R-Type is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up. It brought important innovations which were taken up by other games of the genre: nnthe additional module with optional weapons, the “charge shot” or “beam”, shooting with variable power depending on the time the fire button is pressed.

A combination of physics, genetic engineering and dark magic, the Bydo were created by man in 2501 as a biological weapon. They can be defined by a waveform, although they possess physical mass and a double helix-shaped DNA structure identical to their creator. They were placed in containers as large as the Moon where they continued to evolve.
Humanity attempted to send thousands of Bydo through a dimensional hole against an enemy civilization. But an anomaly appeared and the Bydo became active within the human solar system. They wreaked havoc there until, after 150 hours, they were finally ejected to the other dimension. Humanity in the 26th century seemed saved.
However, the Bydo were still alive and continued their evolution in the parallel dimension. After wandering for an eternity, they reappeared in 2163, 200 years before their abandonment, to demonstrate their power against Earth. Inside the Bydo Empire, a cloning plant was discovered. She was in a sheltered place inside a gigantic computer that controls the planet itself. Thus, not only are the Bydo capable of reproducing as a life form, but they also manage to massively produce mobile armed systems. Humanity's last chance is to send the prototype R-9A, a trans-dimensional fighter equipped with a new set of weapons that could have a chance of destroying the Bydo once and for all.
