Riot Zone
Synopsis
Better known to American players under the name Riot Zone, Crest Of Wolf was quite anticipated by players. After all, there aren't a lot of "Final Fight" games on PC-Engine. Let's move on from the scenario - distressingly banal - to immerse ourselves in what is, let's say it bluntly, a new ersatz of Capcom's hit.
First point against Crest Of Wolf: you can't play it with two people. Well, the guys from Westone are nice, but it was still the least we could do to offer this option in a game of this kind, which is quite expected. We will therefore be content with the solo mode, a hopeless flatness. Fortunately, we can choose between two different characters: the good old man who has been irrevocably labeled "blond / white t-shirt / jeans / sneakers", and his punk friend. Our two friends, Hawk and Tony, not to mention them, will wander the streets of Kowloon, just to find their girlfriend kidnapped by the Dragon Zone crime syndicate: well, finally, we have our scenario. At their disposal, no weapons, just their fists and above all, the jumping kick: if this hold has always worked more or less well in progressive fighting games, it will never have been as effective as in Crest Of Wolf. Unstoppable and powerful enough that you can finish the game without any problem and, thereby, greatly reduce its interest. In fact, we wander through the five long levels, and we encounter no difficulty in seeing the end. Crest Of Wolf also has the drawback of being extremely repetitive, so understand that not much happens, apart from the few rascals who will come to trouble you: "advance and strike", that seems to be the motto of our heroes...
The environments crossed are quite numerous and varied even if they are often of questionable aesthetics. The sprites are correct but suffer from a big lack of diversity: seven or eight different enemy sprites (bosses not included) throughout the game, and of course their colored twins (blue, green, red...). As for the music, it is good, even if you sometimes have the impression of being in a piano bar rather than in a seedy alley.
In short, and even if the tone was rather negative until then, Crest Of Wolf is not a bad game. Let's say that it only takes two or three tries to get bored of it.
