Robert Byrne's Pool Challenge
Synopsis
Robert Byrne's Pool Challenge (now called "Cue Stick") was developed by Odyssey Software in 1992. George C. Rucker III programmed the Cue Stick game and it would later be passed to American Video Entertainment for publication. Following a twist of fate with the gravity of the pool balls in Cue Stick, the game was pushed back and passed to American Video too late.
American Video Entertainment had licensed the game with Robert Byrnes. Byrnes requested last-minute changes before the game shipped, American Video Entertainment folded, and Cue Stick was canned. Odyssey Software survived a few more years before meeting the same fate.
The game is packed with tons of features. There are four different game modes, including Straight Pool and Nine Ball, a coach mode and multiple table colors. There are also several different frictions (or lack of) that you can add to the table, including ice and sand. This option gives the balls a slightly different behavior, increasing the challenge.
Cue Stick is similar to Side Pocket. If you press select during the game, you can see the numbers on the different balls. A graph at the bottom lets you decide how strong the Cue Stick is versus the Cue Ball.
At first glance, you could say that it's just another pool game. However, the options make the game superb.
