Synopsis

Shadow Brain is a futuristic and dystopian first-person dungeon RPG. This game had two particularities upon its release. The Japanese group "The Alfee", pictured on the cover, participated in its development and the game was delivered with a VHS presenting its universe.
These two specificities are explained by the two companies which developed and published it: Pony Canyon and Scitron, the first also publishing videos and the second being a music label for games on computers and consoles.

In the year 2040, a cataclysm not specified by the VHS hit humanity then at its peak, the forests of gigantic skyscrapers and vehicles floating in the air gave way to a new post-apocalyptic civilization rising from its ashes and where the megalopolis of Lemuria, the fastest in its development, became in the 2090s the symbol of hope for the survivors of humanity.
However, survival in Lemuria remained precarious. Humans now led fierce opposition to robots and modified humans called "cyborgs." Territorial disputes became commonplace and sinister creatures from biotechnology experiments regularly escaped from their farms and laboratories attracted to the cities.
A network game called "Brain Trip" and requiring a direct connection to the brain became an unavoidable hit among the population of Lemuria, the network used spread to all the towns and villages and more and more addicts did not suspect that their most terrible enemy was hidden within it.

Back in 1990, Professor Rudger is a prominent scientist studying space travel and the space-time continuum. His ambitious and revolutionary work is still unknown to his peers. His son Jun, the hero you will play, is a genius passionate about computers and video games who managed to develop artificial intelligence thanks to the assistance and advice of his father. AI that developed so quickly that Jun decided to curb its abilities for the time being.
One day, Rudger and Jun were contacted from the future by Layla, a mysterious woman known as "Digital Venus" in the 2090s, her time, who requested their help. Thanks to Layla's data, Professor Rudger was able to develop a machine to travel into the future which he decided to test personally.
When Jun noticed his father missing, he immediately went after him and woke up 100 years later in Lemuria. A robot named "Helper" was waiting for him and transmitted a message from his father explaining to him that, hunted by a powerful enemy, he must remain hidden. “Helper” also had a VDS for Jun, a multifunction system allowing in particular to connect to the network. As soon as Jun equipped this VDS, he was contacted by Layla who, discovered by the enemy, barely had time to give Jun instructions to follow to find his father before the connection was lost.
