Shin Sangoku Musou - Multi Raid Special
Synopsis
Koei brings us another addition to the Dynasty Warriors series. This episode still features the same storyline based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, with the different officers as playable characters. The list and appearance of the characters are the same as in Dynasty Warriors 6, which means that some characters from the previous game are not available.
The difference is that the player is only allowed to choose one character for the chosen force (either Wei, Wu or Shu) that starts in a village that will serve as a hub, or camp, from which one accesses the battles of the game. While completing story missions, some characters are added and can be played without starting a new game, meaning that all weapons, items and materials acquired will be retained.
The chosen character can be customized in different ways. In addition to the main weapon, a secondary weapon, chosen from many types of weapons, can be equipped. Both weapons can be changed at any time during the battle, to adapt to the situation. A new addition is the Chi system which allows to give special abilities to the character, there are four locations to equip the Chi (both arms and legs). Weapons can also be customized by adding orbs that impart different abilities, such as elemental properties.
In the village, the player can exchange materials, buy weapons, items to use in battle, Chi skills and orbs. Some NPCs may appear in the village, some giving materials or items, or officer cards, which can be configured to help the village grow. Over time, better items can be acquired in stores.
By talking to the quest board or the guard at the village gate, the main missions or requests can be chosen. Each battle is a series of small cards where various enemy soldiers and weapons fight, eventually leading to the enemy army commander. The purpose of each battle can vary, some are classic objectives like "Defeat the Commander" and others, less battle-oriented, like "Recover all treasure chests". In addition, there are also bonus missions that require the player to defeat a particular unit, reach a certain point before a certain time, etc. Each bonus mission gives additional experience points at the end.
Other new features to the combat system are the ability to have aerial combat, and the main feature of the game: the Fury mode, triggered when the Fury gauge (which replaces the traditional Musou gauge) is full. The furious character has better stats and better sets of moves, and can trigger the famous Musou attack to deal additional damage.
To add to the surreal look of the game, some new bosses are actually huge beast-like weapons and usually require the help of other players to defeat them. Multiplayer mode is available only via an AdHoc connection and can connect up to four players.
