Synopsis

Shin Satomi Hakkenden: Hikari to Yami no Tatakai ("The Eight New Dog Chronicles: The Battle of Light and Darkness") is a classic Japanese RPG that follows the story of the 19th-century historical novel Nansou Satomi Hakkenden (or Eight Dog Chronicles). The samurai half-brothers, all descendants of a dog, came together to experience various adventures throughout the Japanese Sengoku period. The game is specifically based on a 1983 action film, released in the West under the name "Legend of the Eight Samurai", which itself is based on a 1982 adventure novel called Shin Satomi Hakkenden.

The game offers the particularity of being able to choose to embody one of the eight samurai, each starting the game in a different location. Their goal is to meet and recruit their brothers, ultimately forming a group of eight. The game is otherwise relatively consistent with the canons of the genre: the player divides his time between exploring towns and talking to NPCs, and fighting monsters and enemy soldiers in dungeons and the overworld map via a turn-based combat system.
