Space Harrier
Synopsis
1985 - Sega -
Here is a shoot them up that is as great as it is original. You lead a sort of soldier of the future armed with a rifle (laser, plasma, LCD...we don't really know) with unlimited ammunition. And you will need ammunition to destroy your enemies, obstacles and bosses that prevent you from reaching the end of the 18 levels (on the arcade version). All this using the stick and the single button!
You control your character from a rear view, in a sort of false 3D. You can run, fly, gain altitude, turn in all directions. The speed is extremely high and although quite confusing to aim, the view quickly becomes exhilarating. You shoot at a whole range of enemies as varied as they are original. You can break almost everything, including decorative elements, however, some pylons are indestructible and you will have to avoid them. It goes very, very quickly and your reflexes will be put to the test.
2 bonus courses will allow you to breathe a little: you climb on the back of a kind of large caterpillar, or dragon (depending on your point of view) like "endless story". While riding this large mount, you will have to destroy everything that is standing (tree, bush, even pylons cannot resist it).
The graphics are superb, the animation is as fluid as it is fast and gives an impression of speed worthy of Outrun (released a year later). The sound effects are quite basic, but the musical theme is particularly successful, so much so that after a few games, it's impossible to put it down. A masterpiece of playful music video.
Rarely imitated, never equaled, here is a title that is unlike anything else and worth trying if you don't know it.
