Synopsis

Today, it seems that it is more curiosity about the origins of “Speedball 2” that can make us play “Speedball” than real pleasure, when we know how much its successor is superior in every way. “Speedball” has aged much less well, but it must be said that it is very hard to judge it in terms of the second part. To be fair, we should have the opinion of players who started with this first “Speedball” before discovering the “second”, and not the other way around…

Certain principles of the future video game masterpiece are there: a button and eight directions as the only basic controls, violence, bonuses on the field, bumpers imported from pinball, the tunnel which sends the ball to the other side of the field... A few differences however: there are five players per team, there are no transfers, no money, no training... A sort of first draft that largely justifies its outcome.
