Synopsis

The game takes place five years after the events of The King of Fighters As his former comrade, Elisabeth Blanctorche, prepares to stop him, the fighters receive an invitation to another King of Fighters tournament hosted by someone labeled "R". The tournament is sponsored by a female Rose who is controlled by "Those from the Past", the organization behind the previous two tournaments who attempted to break the Orochi seal with Ash acting as their agent.

When the winning team reaches the end of the game, Saiki, the leader of "Those From The Past", sets his work in motion. Saiki plans to use the energy spent by the winning team to allow him to travel through time, killing his own subordinate just to face the champions. However, as the fight rages on, Botan finds that the door that connects them to the past begins to close despite the battle. Before Saiki can act, he is ambushed by Ash who kills him and steals his power. It is then revealed that, while Ash had been enlisted by Saiki to obtain the three sacred treasures to power the Time Gate, Ash had no intention of helping Saiki. Ash is suddenly overwhelmed by Saiki's character, facing the tournament champions. Saiki is defeated at the gate but persists in going through the past, believing that it means nothing since he can return to the past and then go through the gate again to attempt his plan again. However, Ash stops his attempt and allows the door to close, leaving Saiki trapped in the present. Ash being Saiki's descendant, he denies Saiki's existence in the past and forces his own existence to cease. As Ash disappears from the world of the living, the flow of time resumes. In the Story Mode epilogue, Chizuru and Iori regain their powers. The remaining members of Saiki's group leave. As it seems everyone forgets Ash's existence, Elizabeth remains emotionally destroyed as she still remembers their childhood.
