Synopsis

Guybrush Threepwood, a young man eager to become a powerful pirate, travels to Melee Island, a pirate paradise. Upon arrival, he meets three "important pirates" at the SCUMM bar who give him three challenges to test his worth. These involve defeating legendary sword fighting master Carla, finding buried treasure, and stealing a statue from the Governor's Mansion. During a botched break-in at the mansion, he meets and subsequently falls in love with Governor Elaine Marley. Elsewhere, we see the ghost pirate LeChuck pining for the love of his life, the same Elaine Marley, and hatching a plan to capture her. While Guybrush is busy finishing the trials, LeChuck and his ghost pirate crew kidnap him and take him to Monkey Island. At the end of the trials, Guybrush discovers this revelation and purchases a ship from Stan, a used ship salesman who informs him that the ship requires a crew of four. After gathering Carla, the master swordfighter he had previously defeated, Meathook, a pirate with two hooks replacing his hands, and Otis, a prisoner from Melee Island Prison, Guybrush and his crew set sail in pursuit to rescue her.
