Synopsis

A long period of peace has passed in Britannia, without major threats disrupting the lives of the population. Yet something is wrong in the country. Magic seems to be dying and mages are going crazy. People are unhappy and feel spiritually empty and betrayed in life. A new sect called "The Fellowship" is expanding its membership to the lower classes and gaining influence through its prominent members rising to leadership positions in society.

The player is the Avatar again. One evening, a red, demonic face appears on the Avatar's computer screen on Earth and declares his imminent rule over Britannia. Alarmed, the Avatar checks the stone circle and finds a moongate already waiting to send the hero to Trinsic. Upon arrival, it turns out that a brutal murder has taken place. While investigating, the Avatar learns of similar murders in the past and is directly confronted with more such murders throughout his journey.

The Fellowship becomes increasingly suspicious, especially its leader, Batlin. Additionally, a mysterious voice periodically appears to give the Avatar questionable advice. Eventually, after much peril, the Avatar reunites with the Time Lord, who reveals the true nature of recent events: the Fellowship is the puppet of the red-faced being, the Guardian.

The Guardian has set up a plot to enter Britannia through a Black Moongate and is using three black rock generators to expand its influence before its arrival. The Avatar destroys the Generators, then rushes to Avatar Island to intercept the completion of the Black Gate. In a brutal battle with Batlin and the Elusive Murderers, the latter are brought to justice while the former escape via teleportation. Just before the Guardian can pass through, the Avatar destroys the Gate.

Britannia is saved at the cost of blocking the Avatar from the realm with an ominous threat of further unrest and destruction left by the Guardian. Thus, the Age of Armageddon begins and continues in Ultima Underworld II and Ultima VII, Part Two: Serpent Isle.
