Xargon is a 2D side-scrolling action platformer. Malvineous is initially equipped with a basic laser gun, which can be upgraded by collecting power-ups or purchasing upgrades from a store. These include additional laser bullets, rapid fire mode, limited ammo fireballs, and many more. The gun can be controlled by pressing the up or down arrow keys, which causes it to advance slightly up or down. The store is accessible at any time, provided the player has collected a sufficient amount of emeralds, which serve as currency. It is possible to purchase health units, invincibility bonuses and weapon upgrades.
