Synopsis

Kyouto Anba Sansou Satsujin Jiken is a murder adventure game based on the writings of Misa Yamamura, a Japanese crime novel author. The protagonist of the story is Akiko Sonoyama, a freelancer who finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery after the host's son dies during dinner right after drinking wine. The game uses videos and live actors and shows the protagonist in the third person during the investigation, like other games of that era, such as The Beast Within or Phantasmagoria 2. During gameplay, full-screen videos appear in the center of the screen with a surrounding window showing various action icons and game progress. While the player character appears during cut-scenes and dialogue, navigation in the environment is done in first person. During dialogue, the player is given a list of questions they can ask, with the answers being a set of live videos of certain characters speaking to the player. 15 years after the release of the 3DO game, the PSP remake with the same title was released. The main difference is that the actors have been removed and the characters have been replaced by silhouettes. The game's interface has been changed to resemble a mystery visual novel, but with selectable actions such as speaking or informing, making the game feel less like a typical visual novel and more like a classic visual novel.
