Youkai Douchuuki
Synopsis
Tarosuke, on his way to his destiny determined by Buddha, travels through "Jigoku" (the equivalent of Japanese hell) fighting the "Yokai" (mythical Japanese monsters). He can destroy them by sending Ki pellets at them.
The game has five levels: Jigoku Iriguchi (Hell's Gate), Kugyou no Michi (Path of Penance), Yuukai (Ghost Sea), Sabaki no Tani (Valley of Judgment), and Rinnekai (Land of Transmigration). There are several possible paths that can be taken at different times which will determine one of the five possible endings of the game.
Each level is punctuated by a boss fight.
Before these fights, Tarosuke kneels at a Buddha temple and prays, calling upon "Monmotaro" (not to be confused with "Momotar?"), a spirit that floats in the air sending balls of energy at the boss and his minions.
The story is notably inspired by the tale of Urashima Tar? the fisherman who saved a turtle who was in fact the daughter of the king of the ocean.
Depending on his actions during the game, Tarosuke will experience one of the following 5 destinies: he will end up in hell, in the world of hungry ghouls, in the world of beasts, will return to the world of humans or will be accepted into paradise.
Note that to earn his place in Heaven, Tarosuke must neither collect nor kill anything at level 5.
