Genesis Plus GX covers the 8- and 16-bit Sega line: SG-1000, Master System, Game Gear, Mega Drive, and Mega-CD. It's the reference core on RetroArch. The 32X isn't supported: for those games, you'll need PicoDrive instead.

1. What needs nothing

SG-1000, Master System, Game Gear, and Mega Drive work with no system file at all. Open the game and you're off.

2. The Mega-CD case

  1. The Mega-CD (Sega CD) requires the console's BIOS, which differs by region:
    bios_CD_E.bin (Europe), bios_CD_U.bin (USA), bios_CD_J.bin (Japan).
  2. Place them in RetroArch's system folder.
  3. The BIOS must match the game's region, otherwise you'll get a black screen.

3. Game formats

  • Cartridges: .md, .smd, .gen, .bin, .sms, .gg, .sg.
  • Mega-CD: .chd preferably, or .cue/.bin.

4. Recommended settings

  • Blargg NTSC filter: reproduces the period composite look, including the checkerboard transparency effects that old TVs naturally blended.
  • Region: leave it on automatic, the core detects the game's format.
