Mesen is the most accurate NES emulator, and it also supports SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and PC Engine. No configuration is needed to get started.

1. Installation

  1. Download the latest version from the official repository.
  2. Open a game: that’s it—no BIOS is required.

2. What Sets It Apart

  • Cycle-accurate emulation: Games that utilize exotic hardware behaviors run correctly where other emulators fail.
  • Rewind: rewind a few seconds after an error.
  • Comprehensive debugging tools—invaluable if you’re interested in the inner workings of games.

3. Recommended Settings

  • Video filter: try “NTSC” to replicate the look of a CRT TV, or stick with raw pixels if you prefer a sharper image.
  • Overscan: hides the few lines at the edges that TVs of that era naturally cropped.
  • Enable automatic save: pick up exactly where you left off.

4. Not working?

  • The game won’t load → unzip the archive, or check that the cartridge’s mapper is supported (this is rare; Mesen supports almost all of them).
