ScummVM isn't really an emulator: it reimplements the engines of classic adventure games. Monkey Island, Broken Sword, Simon the Sorcerer, and hundreds of others run natively.

1. Add a game

  1. Copy the files from your original game into a dedicated folder.
  2. In ScummVM, click Add Game and select that folder.
  3. ScummVM automatically identifies the game and applies the correct engine.

No disk image is needed: it’s the game’s data files that matter.

2. Useful Settings

  • Graphics filter: HQ3x smoothly renders hand-drawn backgrounds, while none preserves the original pixels.
  • Enable vertical sync for smooth scrolling.
  • For games with CD music, place the audio tracks next to the data files.

3. Best Practices

Check the project’s official compatibility list: it indicates for each game whether it’s playable from start to finish and flags any remaining rare bugs.

4. Not working?

  • “Game not detected” → You’ve selected the wrong folder, or data files are missing.
  • No music → The CD tracks aren’t in the right location, or they’re in an unrecognized format.
