xemu

xemu emulates the original Xbox. Getting it up and running is more demanding than average: it needs several files extracted from an original console.

1. Required files

  • MCPX ROM — the boot chip.
  • Xbox BIOS (often named Complex_4627.bin or equivalent).
  • Hard drive image (xbox_hdd.qcow2) — xemu can generate a blank one.
  • EEPROM — unique to your console, contains its key and region.

The MCPX and the BIOS must come from your own Xbox, extracted via a software exploit or a mod chip. The hard drive image, on the other hand, can be created: xemu can generate a blank one with no protected content.

2. Configuration

  1. Launch xemu, go to Machine → Settings.
  2. Enter the paths to the MCPX, the BIOS, the hard drive and the EEPROM.
  3. Restart the emulator: you should land on the Xbox dashboard.

3. Launching a game

xemu reads disc images in XISO format (.iso). Some images need to be reconverted: the extract-xiso tool does the conversion.

4. Not working?

  • Black screen on startup → missing BIOS or MCPX, or the two are incompatible with each other.
  • "Dirty shutdown" → the image wasn't properly unmounted on last close. Relaunch xemu and let the console power off normally; recreating the image is a last resort.
  • Game won't launch → the ISO isn't in XISO format, reconvert it.
