Comix Zone 64: Sega's Mega Drive Beat 'Em Up Now Runs On Real Nintendo 64 Hardware
Seeing a Sega game run on a Nintendo console of the same generation belongs to alternate history, and that is exactly what Frogbull is claiming. The homebrew developer put Comix Zone 64 online on 30 August 2026, a conversion of the Sega Technical Institute beat 'em up released on Mega Drive in 1995, running on genuine Nintendo 64 hardware rather than inside an emulator. The project comes with a knowingly silly pitch: what if the Nintendo Ultra 64 had reigned supreme over the fifth generation, forcing Sega to publish its titles on a rival platform?
Technically, the conversion is built on LibDragon, the open source development library that underpins much of the modern N64 scene. That choice explains the approach: rather than running a Mega Drive emulator on the machine, Frogbull rebuilds the game with the target console's own tools, with all the memory and bandwidth constraints that implies.
This is not this developer's first impossible crossover. Frogbull has made a speciality of them, with playable versions of Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII and Crash Bandicoot on Saturn, plus a Spyro the Dragon on N64 released in late 2025. Community feedback on Comix Zone 64 does flag reservations about performance and audio, which remains common for this kind of port built by one person for 1996 hardware.
The project is distributed from Frogbull's Patreon page, where the developer publishes builds and related updates; that page is the reference for compatibility details and instructions. Anyone drawn to the technical side will find official documentation and code examples on the LibDragon site and on its GitHub repository.
