Commodore celebrates its first anniversary and launches "Made For U(ltimate)", a label for games built for the C64 Ultimate
Commodore International is marking the first anniversary of its comeback with the announcement of a new program called "Made For U(ltimate)". The company, revived under the leadership of Christian Simpson, made waves last year with the launch of the Commodore 64 Ultimate, a computer faithfully recreating the iconic 1982 machine through a modern FPGA chip.
In a message posted on July 31, 2026 on its official account, the brand summed up the ambition behind this "Year Two": "One year ago today, Commodore rebooted. What a year it's been! The Commodore 64 Ultimate wouldn't be where it is without you. Now it's time to build Year Two." The "Made For U(ltimate)" program aims to encourage developers to create games that specifically leverage the C64 Ultimate's own capabilities, beyond simple compatibility with period software.
A holographic label and a fan survey
Every title approved by Commodore will be able to carry an official "Made For U(ltimate)" holographic sticker, signalling to buyers that a game fully takes advantage of the hardware. Before revealing the final shape of the program, the brand launched a survey inviting its community to indicate which "games, features, and experiences" they would like to see arrive on the platform. This announcement follows the much-discussed launch of the Commodore Callback, a flip phone inspired by Commodore's aesthetic, which drew as much enthusiasm as criticism within the retro community.
It remains to be seen whether this label will translate into a genuine catalogue of original games or simply a marketing push around re-releases already available on the C64 Ultimate. The first answers could come in the coming months, as Commodore clarifies the program's eligibility criteria.
