Super Mario Sunshine gets a mod adding 10-player online play
A member of the Super Mario Elements community known as Daytendo 64 has just released an ambitious mod for Super Mario Sunshine on GameCube, letting up to 10 players play together online via the Dolphin emulator. The mod is available as a direct download on GameBanana, which also details installation instructions, while Dolphin's official netplay guide explains how to set up an online session with friends.
Two modes are offered: a co-op mode where shines, blue coins, and other progress states are synchronized across all players, and a hide-and-seek mode where the host can pick or randomly assign the seekers. The mod also adds 15 custom playable characters, including Sonic, Shadow, Mario, and Waluigi spotted in early demos.
An online session you'll still need to organize yourself
Since Dolphin doesn't natively offer public servers for this kind of mod, using virtual VPN software like Radmin VPN is recommended to simplify the connection between players, either alongside or instead of traditional port forwarding. A legal copy of the original NTSC-U version of the game is still required for the mod to work.
