Pokémon Emerald Arena adds real-time catching in version 0.6.0
Independent developer Germán Burgardt released version 0.6.0 of Pokémon Emerald Arena on September 20, 2026, his ROM hack that replaces Pokémon Emerald's turn-based battle system with real-time fights where players move their Pokémon around, dodge attacks, and can even break parts of the arena's scenery.
The headline addition in this update is real-time catching: players can now aim and throw a Poké Ball mid-fight (by holding L+R) to catch the opposing Pokémon and instantly add it to a team of up to six members, without going through the game's classic menus. Version 0.6.0 also adds all three Hoenn starter families, several early-route Pokémon, and 44 moves adapted to the new action-based system.
Still built on your own Emerald cartridge
As with any ROM hack of this kind, players need their own unmodified Pokémon Emerald ROM file (USA or Europe version) to use it: the patch never redistributes the original game. Installation happens through an HTML page bundled in the project's archive, which applies the patch directly in the browser with no extra software, before the resulting file is loaded into any Game Boy Advance emulator. Save data, experience, and team composition are all preserved.
The full project, with the latest release and detailed installation documentation, is available on GitHub, which also offers a step-by-step quickstart guide for newcomers.
