Jailbreaking your PS3 in 2026: the complete beginner's PS3HEN guide

Unlike the Wii or the original Xbox, the PS3 isn't really "jailbroken" in the strict sense anymore since support for very old firmwares (3.55 and below) ended: the method used today by the vast majority of players is called PS3HEN (Homebrew ENabler), developed by the PS3Xploit team. Unlike a CFW, it doesn't replace the official firmware: it simply enables homebrew functions on top of it, making it safer and compatible with every PS3 model, including the Super Slim.

⚠️ Check your version before starting. This guide reflects the situation as of July 28, 2026: PS3HEN natively supports official firmware (OFW) versions 4.80, 4.81, and 4.82. If your console is on a newer version (the case for most PS3s today), you'll first need to install a hybrid firmware (HFW), which mimics an older firmware to stay compatible with the exploit while keeping access to PlayStation Network and the latest features. The most up-to-date HFW version is 4.93.1: always double-check on the official PS3Xploit website that no newer version has come out since.

Prerequisites

Before starting, you'll need: a PS3 with a working web browser and a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection; an empty USB drive formatted as FAT32; a computer to download the files; and, most importantly, your exact current firmware version, found under Settings → System Information. Backing up your important data is strongly recommended before any of this.

Installation steps

1. Note your current firmware version in the console's settings.
2. If you're on 4.82 OFW or below, you can go straight to installing PS3HEN through the console's browser by visiting ps3xploit.me.
3. If you're on a newer version (the most common case), first download the HFW file matching your model from the official site, put it on your USB drive in the correct folder, then install it as a regular system update via Settings → System Update → Update via Storage Media.
4. Once the HFW is installed, open the PS3's web browser and go to the address given by PS3Xploit to launch the exploit and enable PS3HEN.
5. A confirmation message appears once HEN is active; you can then install a homebrew file manager such as webMAN MOD to get the most out of the console.

Important warnings

Never enable «Factory Service Mode» (FSM) and don't install CCAPI alongside PS3HEN: both are explicitly discouraged by the PS3Xploit team and can cause malfunctions. The brick risk stays low with HEN compared to a full CFW, but there's still a risk of a PlayStation Network ban if pirated game copies are used; RetroVault only condones using backups of games you legally own.
