PS5-Linux: the complete guide to transform your PS5 into a Linux PC with Steam
⚠️ Update as of September 22, 2026: two things have changed since this guide was published. First, compatibility now extends well beyond the firmware range listed below: the project now covers firmwares 3.00 through 7.61. Second, and more importantly, the project's lead developer, Andy Nguyen (TheFloW), announced in mid-September 2026 that he is leaving the PS5 scene entirely after a security exploit he was working on leaked prematurely to Sony. The code remains available under the GPL 3.0 license for other contributors, but the future of official development is uncertain, and the previously announced PS5 Pro support has been dropped. Check the project's current status before diving in.
Your old PS5 Phat may be worth much more than you think. Thanks to the open source project ps5-linux published by security researcher Andy Nguyen (@theflow0), you can turn it into a real Linux PC capable of running er Steam, emulators, and potentially GTA V ray traced at 60fps - without physically changing the console, and with the ability to return to the PlayStation interface with a simple reboot.
This guide is written for complete beginners. No prior knowledge of Linux or jailbreaking is required.

🔍 Step 0 - Is your PS5 compatible?
Before doing anything, check two Things:
The model
You need a PS5 Phat - the original model with disc drive, released late 2020. The PS5 Slim (released late 2023) is not compatible. The Phat weighs ~4.5 kg and is ~39 cm tall. The Slim weighs ~3.2 kg and is significantly more compact.
The Firmware
Go to Settings → System → System Software → Console Information and note the version number.
💡 How to read the PS5 firmware number?
>On your console, the number is displayed in a long format like this: 22.01-04.51.00. The tutorial refers to thecentral partonly (here 04.51, or firmware 4.51). Ignores the prefix and suffix.
| Firmware displayed on the console Short version Compatible? M.2 SSD? | |||
21.xx-03.00.xx to 21.xx-03.21.xx | 3.00 → 3.21 | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
21.xx-04.00.xx to 22.xx-04.51.xx | 4.00 → 4.51 | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
23.xx-05.xx.xx and higher | 5.xx+ | ❌ No | - |
🚫 If you're on non-compatible firmware, stop there. Do not update - you would make your console permanently incompatible.
🛒 Step 1 - What you need to buy
- A USB external SSD of at least 64 GB - A Samsung T7 type SSD (~40€) is highly recommended. A slow USB drive will make the experience painful.
- A USB Ethernet or Wi-Fi Adapter - The PS5's built-in Wi-Fi does not work on Linux. A USB Ethernet dongle (~€8) is the simplest and most reliable.
- A USB keyboard and a USB mouse - Essential. Logitech Unifying dongles work well.
- A USB Bluetooth dongle (optional) - To use your DualSense wirelessly. Without this, it will need to be wired.
⚙️ Step 2 - Prepare your PS5
Mandatory - Power the USB ports in standby: Settings → System → Power saving → Functions available in rest mode → sets “USB ports power” to “Always”.
>Required - Disable HDMI link: Settings → HDMI → Enable HDMI device link → disable.
Recommended - Disable automatic updates: Settings → System → Update and system software settings → disable. If your PS5 is updated, you will lose compatibility permanently.
💻 Step 3 - Create the Linux image on your P C
On Windows
3.1 - Install WSL2: Open PowerShell as administrator and type:
wsl --install
Restart your PC.
3.2 - Install Docker in WSL2: Open the automatically installed Ubuntu app and type:
sudo apt update sudo apt install docker.io -y sudo service docker start sudo usermod -aG docker $USER
Then in PowerShell admin: wsl --shutdown - reopens Ubuntu.
3.3 - Upload and build the image:
cd ~/ git clone https://github.com/ps5-linux/ps5-linux-image cd ps5-linux-image chmod +x ./build_image.sh ./build_image.sh --ubuntu2604 distro
This step may take 10 to 30 minutes. At the end, you will have a file output/ps5-ubuntu2604.img.
On Mac or Linux
git clone https://github.com/ps5-linux/ps5-linux-image cd ps5-linux-image chmod +x ./build_image.sh ./build_image.sh --ubuntu2604 distro
💾 Step 4 - Copy the image to your USB drive
Download and install Balena Etcher from etcher.balena.io. Click “Flash from file”, select ps5-ubuntu2604.img, select your USB drive, then “Flash!”.
⚠️ This operationerases completely the USB drive. Make sure it's empty.
🔌 Step 5 - Plug the hardware into your PS5
- Plug it in USB / SSDdrive into a rear USB Type-A port or the bottom front USB-C port. Avoid the front USB-A port - it's USB 2.0, too slow.
- Plug in the USB Ethernet adaptor and network cable.
- Plug in the cl avier and mouse.
🚀 Step 6 - Start the jailbreak
For this step, you need a PC on the same network as your PS5. >6.1 - Download tools:
git clone https://github.com/idlesauce/umtx2 cd umtx2 pip install -r requirements.txt
6.2 - Download the payload: Go to github.com/ps5-linux/ps5-linux-loader/releases and downloads ps5-linux-loader.elf. Place it in the umtx2 folder.
6.3 - Find the IP of your PC: In the terminal, type ipconfig (Windows) or ip addr (Mac/Linux). Note the typical address 192.168.1.X.
6.4 - Configure DNS: In the umtx2 folder, open dns.conf and replace the existing IP with that of your PC.
6.5 - Launch the servers in two separate terminals:
#Terminal 1 python fakedns.py -c dns.conf #Terminal 2 python host.py
6.6 - Configure DNS on PS5: Settings → Network → Settings → Configure c Internet connection → Advanced settings → Primary DNS = IP of your PC, Secondary DNS = 0.0.0.0.
6.7 - Trigger exploit: Settings → Users and accounts → Others → User manual. If a certificate warning appears, accept it. The PS5 will freeze for a few seconds - this is normal.
6.8 - Send payload: Note the IP of your PS5 in Settings → Network → Show connection status, then:
socat -t 99999999 - TCP:192.168.1.XX:9021 < ps5-linux-loader.elf
If socat is not installed: sudo apt install socat (Ubuntu/WSL2) or brew install socat (Mac).
>If all goes well, your PS5 will restart on Ubuntu Linux from your USB drive!
🎮 Step 7 - Install Steam under Ubuntu
sudo apt update sudo apt install steam -y
Launch Steam, connect, and install your games. To play Windows games, enable Proton: Steam → Settings → Compatibility → Enable Steam Play for all other titles.
⚡ Step 8 - Performance tuning (optional)
# Switch the CPU to performance mode sudo cpupower frequency-set -g performance
Attention: more performance = more heat. Make sure your PS5 is well ventilated.
🔄 Return to PlayStation OS
Turn off your PS5 (not just sleep), unplug the USB drive, and turn it back on. It returns to the Sony OS as if nothing had happened. Your PS5 internal SSD has never been touched. >To restart Linux, reconnect the key and start from step 6. The exploit must be rerun each time.
❓ Common issues
| Problem Solution | |
| The PS5 is not connecting to the user manual | Check that the DNS is properly configured and that both Python servers are running |
| Payload is not sending (socat fails) | Checks that PS5 and PC are on the same network. Check the IP of your PS5. |
| The PS5 reboots but won't boot on Linux | Check that the key is in the correct port (rear or USB-C bottom front) |
| No internet in Ubuntu | Built-in Wi-Fi is not working. Uses USB Ethernet adaptor. |
| DualSense is not recognized | Use a Bluetooth USB dongle, or plug in the wired USB-C controller. |
