Installing RetroArch on Android in 2026: the simple beginner's guide

RetroArch isn't an emulator by itself, but a "frontend" that hosts dozens of emulation cores (the actual emulators) for the NES, Super Nintendo, Mega Drive, PS1, Saturn, and many other systems, all within a single app. It's the most complete solution on Android, at the cost of a slightly more technical learning curve than a single-console emulator.

⚠️ Check the version before installing. This guide covers RetroArch version 1.22.2_GIT, the most stable and recent as of July 28, 2026 (version 1.22.0 had display bugs that have since been fixed). Always double-check on the official Libretro website that no newer version is available.

Prerequisites

You'll need: a smartphone or tablet running at least Android 4.1 (Android 9.0 or higher recommended for better performance); about 200MB of free storage for the app; and, optionally, a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller (Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch Pro controllers are auto-detected). As with any emulator, RetroArch doesn't provide any ROMs: each user must supply their own game files, sourced from cartridges or discs they legally own.

Installation steps

1. Download RetroArch only from an official source: the official Libretro website, F-Droid, or the Google Play Store (note that the Play Store version sometimes lags behind on available cores).
2. Install the app, then open it: a simplified menu appears on first launch.
3. Go to Main Menu → Load Core → Download a Core, then scroll the alphabetical list of available systems and select the ones you're interested in (each core corresponds to a system, e.g. «Nestopia» for the NES).
4. Copy your game files onto your device's internal storage, then use Load Content within RetroArch to browse to those files and launch a game.
5. Set up your controller if needed under Settings → Input: most modern controllers are automatically recognized as soon as they're connected.

Important warnings

Never download RetroArch from an unofficial third-party site: fake versions bundled with unwanted software sometimes circulate. The app itself is entirely legal; only using pirated ROMs raises legal issues, so RetroVault encourages using only backups of games you legally own.
