A new mod finally lets you run CD games from a flash cart on the Sega Multi-Mega / CDX
On a separate Mega Drive and Sega CD add-on, plugging in a flash cart like the MEDPro or Mega SD to run Sega CD games without a disc has been common practice for years. But on the Sega Multi-Mega (branded CDX in North America), which packs both systems into a single compact unit, that has been impossible until now: the flash cart's cartridge conflicts with the bus the Sega CD chip constantly relies on, since you can't simply disconnect it the way you can on a separate setup.
Modder Zaxour has just released the fix, a kit called the CDX Engine Idler, sold for $50 on Ko-fi. The mod resolves the bus conflict that had previously blocked any CD image from being read off a cartridge on these all-in-one models.
A technical install, reserved for the more hands-on tinkerers
Compatibility has been confirmed with the MEDPro, and should theoretically work with the Mega SD as well. The installation itself, however, is far from trivial: the kit requires work inside the console, described as "quite complicated" due to the Multi-Mega/CDX's compact size and densely packed internal components. Professional help or solid soldering experience is strongly recommended before attempting it. Installation documentation is provided via a Google Drive link included with the purchase.
For owners of these fairly rare all-in-one consoles, it finally puts an end to a frustration that has lasted since the CDX launched back in 1994.
