Sonic Mania's unofficial Dreamcast port isn't out yet, but it's already "functionally there"
Sonic Mania (2017) is joining the growing list of unofficial ports of modern games to the Sega Dreamcast. The project is led by developers SonicFreak94 (Michael Fadely), Falco Girgis, and Jnmartin, who are using the game's decompilation released by the RSDKModding community in 2022 to rebuild a version running natively on Sega's 128-bit hardware, 3D bonus stages included.
Source code and build instructions for Windows, Linux, Switch, and Dreamcast (via the KallistiOS development kit) are already up on the project's GitHub repository. A video falsely claiming the port was already available for download has been circulating on YouTube these past few days, prompting SonicFreak94 to post a clarification on X.
A public release that will still have to wait
While the game is, in the developer's own words, «functionally there», the team hasn't yet prepared a final build or release materials for a public launch. SonicFreak94 notes that work commitments and health issues could still delay the official release «a little while», urging fans to be patient rather than trust rumors of immediate availability.
