Jailbreaking your Wii U in 2026: the complete beginner's Aroma guide

How to install Aroma, the modern Wii U CFW that puts homebrew directly in the console's menu: prerequisites, detailed steps and precautions for a complete beginner.

The Wii U remains one of the easiest consoles to mod: the exploit relies on a software flaw that works regardless of the official firmware installed. Aroma has replaced Tiramisu as the go-to CFW: instead of having to relaunch a separate homebrew launcher, it installs a plugin that puts homebrew apps directly in the console's main menu.

⚠️ Check the version before you start. This guide reflects the situation as of August 12, 2026: Aroma Beta-27, released May 5, 2026, is the recommended version. Always check the official Wii U Hacks Guide to see if a newer version has come out since.

Prerequisites

You'll need: a Wii U on any official firmware (the exploit works regardless of version); an SD card (8GB minimum, formatted to FAT32); a computer to prepare the files; and either a game compatible with a save-data exploit, or simply the console's web browser for the easiest online method.

Installation steps

1. Prepare your SD card using the automatic preparation tool provided by the official guide, which downloads the right Homebrew Launcher files.
2. Insert the SD card into the Wii U, open the console's web browser and go to the exploit address listed in the guide to launch the Homebrew Launcher.
3. From the Homebrew Launcher, run the Aroma installer app.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions: the installer copies the necessary files to your SD card and sets up the plugin.
5. Reboot the console: homebrew app icons now appear directly on the Wii U's main menu, with no extra step needed.
6. Install the Homebrew App Store to easily grab more apps.

Important warnings

Brick risk stays very low with this software-only method, but never cut the power while files are being copied to the SD card. If you need to run older .elf-format homebrew that isn't compatible with Aroma, you can still boot into the Tiramisu environment from the same menu. RetroVault only endorses using backups of games you legally own.
