Synopsis

A visual novel is an interactive fiction game, featuring mostly static graphics, most often anime-style or sometimes live-action still images (and sometimes video footage). As the name suggests, they are like mixed-race novels.
In Japanese terminology, a distinction is often made between visual novels proper (abbreviated NVL), which consist primarily of narrative and feature very few interactive elements, and adventure games (abbreviated AVG or ADV), which may incorporate problem-solving and other types of gameplay. This distinction is generally lost outside of Japan, where international fans commonly refer to NVLs and ADVs as "visual novels". Visual novels and AVGs are particularly prevalent in Japan, where they account for nearly 70% of PC game titles released in 2006.
