Synopsis

Carom billiards, sometimes called carom billiards or simply carom (and in some cases used synonymously with the straight cushion game from which many carom games derive), is the general title for a family of billiards games that are typically played on pocketless, cloth-covered, 5 by 10 foot tables, often equipped with heated slate tops. In its simplest form, the object of the game is to score points or "scores" by knocking one's own cue ball onto the opponent's cue ball and the object ball(s) in a single shot. The invention and exact date of origin of carom billiards are somewhat obscure, but are believed to date back to the 18th century in France.
