Synopsis

This is the very first game from the Cave company.

The player plays a pilot whose mission is to survive a full-scale exercise lasting eight years. The pilots participating in this event aim to prove their worth in order to prove themselves worthy of entry into the future elite DonPachi squadron. The exercise, however, is made difficult both physically and psychologically because the pilot's enemies are his own comrades, sacrificing themselves to allow the most gifted pilots to survive and pass the test.

The player can choose between three ships at the start of the game or each time:

Type A: a red fighter (orange for player 2), with a tight forward shot.
Type B: a green helicopter (purple for player 2), with a forward shot and two side cannons that can rotate up to 90° when the ship moves horizontally.
Type C: a blue fighter (black for player 2), firing three large beams forward and diagonally.

Armament:

Cannons (main fire button): the arrangement of the cannons depends on each ship:
The red fighter's guns revolve around it, adding their firepower to its main gun.
The green helicopter's guns are positioned to the right and left of it, and rotate when the helicopter moves horizontally.
The blue fighter's guns are positioned aft and outward, producing diagonal fire in addition to the main fire.
Laser (leave the secondary fire button pressed): the cannons combine at the front of the ship and emit a large vertical beam more powerful than the main fire. When the laser fires, the ship is surrounded by a shield which causes the same damage as the laser. This firing mode has the disadvantage of slowing down the ship.
Bomb (bomb button): causes a huge explosion destroying all enemies on the screen and making enemy fire disappear for the duration of the explosion.
Laser Bomb (bomb button during a laser shot): Causes more damage than the normal bomb, but with a reduced angle of attack.

There are three types of Power ups, identified by letters:

P: Increases the power and width of the main shot. Two P bonuses are required to level up. When the player collects the first P bonus, the color of his shot darkens.
B: Adds a bomb to the ship's arsenal.
MP: Appear when the player loses all his lives (these bonuses therefore only appear each time he continues). They allow the ship's armament to be brought to its maximum power.
