Synopsis

Ogura Hyakunin Isshu is a classic Japanese anthology of one hundred Japanese waka written by one hundred poets. Hyakunin Isshu can be translated as “one hundred people, one poem”; it may also refer to the uta-garuta card game, which uses a composite deck of cards based on the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu. Uta-garuta are a type of karuta, traditional Japanese playing cards. This is also the name of the game in which they are used. The game is mainly played during the Japanese New Year holidays. On each card, a poem (waka) is written, and there are a total of 100 poems. The standard collection of poems used is called Hyakunin Isshu, which is often also the name of the set. The collection was chosen by a poet Fujiwara no Teika during the Heian period. There are national conventions for the game.
