The game includes exhibition matches and tournament matches. In exhibition mode, you can choose to play either a single match or a shootout. In tournament mode, you play until you defeat all other teams. At the end of the tournament, the player must face one final team, Nintendo. When the tournament is won, the player receives a code to play the game in a more advanced mode.
Originally, Formation Soccer was a native PC Engine game, released during the time of the 1990 FIFA World Cup. The series was later transferred to Super Nintendo and, finally, to Nintendo 64.
