Synopsis

Mahjong is a game for four players that originated in China. It was called, meaning sparrow in ancient China, and it is still the most commonly used name in some southern Chinese dialects such as Cantonese and Minnan, as well as in Japanese. However, most Mandarin-speaking Chinese now call this game "mahjong."
Mahjong involves skill, strategy and calculation, as well as a certain degree of luck (depending on the variation played, luck can be a minor or dominant factor in victory). In Asia, mahjong is also a very popular game of chance. In this game, each player receives thirteen or sixteen tiles in a hand, depending on the variation played. On their turn, players draw a tile and discard one, aiming to form four or five suits (also depending on the variation) and a pair, or "head". Victory is achieved "on the draw" by drawing a new tile or a discarded tile that completes the hand. So a winning hand actually contains fourteen (or seventeen) tiles.
