Synopsis

Your world has been ravaged by the three Serpent Riders of the Abyss. Two of them left, while D'Sparil remained to oversee the oppression. It is your duty, as a Heretic, to destroy this demon. Heretic is the first game in the Heretic/Hexen franchise. This is where Raven's tradition of taking id's latest game engines, improving them, and using them in a fantasy game begins. Raven's team improved the engine by adding an inventory system, the ability to look up and down, and the ability to fly, as well as lesser features like powerful air currents. Not counting the inventory, the basic gameplay that made Doom successful has remained the same.
