Ibara
Synopsis
Cave gives us his finest shoot here, with detailed and colorful graphics. The explosions are magnificent, with sparks everywhere when you shoot enemies, as well as a multitude of debris. There are many effects: transparency, several planes, distortion, 3D effect, etc...
On the entertainment side it’s even better! Full-screen sprites, gigantic enemies... all the difficulties of the genre are covered, with incredible fluidity. We can just note some slowdowns at level 3 (out of 6), which is armored with shots, huge sprites, and which takes place on three levels.
Small downside for the sound. Indeed, although the music is of excellent quality (hard rock), it is really too covered by sound effects. The latter are however very good, and a voice-over announcing the bonuses as well as the weapons picked up complete the atmosphere.
The gameplay differs completely from the usual “Cave”. Note that this is their first shoot where there are different weapons during the game: homing, Flame, Gatling, Machine Gun, Rocket. The basic shooting is upgradeable, and you can collect 3 different weapons. Each weapon will then form a small module around the ship. This module, when you tap the button, will pull in the opposite direction. If the button is held, it will block the modules. As for bombs, we pick up small green options with a missile. The more missiles you collect, the more powerful the bomb. After about twenty, we are entitled to a huge missile. From then on, holding down B causes a red beam to form at the front of the ship. By letting go, I assure you that the targeted enemy will understand their pain. It is therefore a question of intelligently managing small and big bombs!
We really feel the Raizing gameplay. For example, you no longer hold down the button on fire to slow down the ship like in any other Cave shmup. We're treated to some good old-fashioned shooting, everything going at two hundred miles an hour! Last remark, the shots are not pellets but elongated and rapid shots.
Completely different in its gameplay, its handling and its graphics, Ibara is a real UFO from the publisher. The difference alone is worth a try. But be careful, Ibara is by far the most nervous of Cave's shots. It explodes everywhere without a minute of rest (still that Raizing touch).
