Synopsis

Kanji are the Chinese logographic characters that are used in the modern Japanese writing system along with hiragana, katakana, Indo-Arabic numerals, and occasional use of the Latin alphabet. The Japanese term kanji literally means "Han characters" or "Chinese characters" and is the same written term used in the Chinese language to refer to the system of writing characters.
Chinese characters first came to Japan on items imported from China. An early example of such an importation is a gold seal given by the emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty in 57 AD. It is unclear when the Japanese began to master classical Chinese on their own.
