Synopsis

A visual novel is an interactive fiction game, primarily composed of static, often anime-style graphics, sometimes still images (and sometimes video footage). As its name suggests, it is similar to a multimedia novel.

In Japan, a distinction is generally made between visual novels (NVL), which focus on storytelling and have few interactive elements, and adventure games (AVG or ADV), which can integrate puzzle solving and other types of gameplay. This distinction is often overlooked outside of Japan, where NVL and ADV are commonly referred to as "visual novels" by international gamers. Visual novels and ADVs are particularly prevalent in Japan, where they accounted for nearly 70% of PC games released in 2006.
