Synopsis

Sir Graham is a brave knight who is sent in search of three treasures that were stolen through deception and stealth: a shield that protects its bearer from invaders, a mirror that predicts the future, and a treasure chest that is eternally filled with gold. If Graham returns these treasures to the royal castle, the ailing King Edward the Benevolent of Daventry will hand him the crown. During his travels, Graham will meet people who will help or hinder him.

King's Quest is generally considered the forerunner of third-person adventure games. Unlike early graphic adventures, the player can navigate the on-screen protagonist in eight directions, creating an effect of three-dimensional exploration. The player character can also be hidden from view when hiding behind an object, is subject to gravity, and has different animations for actions such as picking up an object, falling, swimming, etc. Graham can be moved using the arrow keys and perform various actions as the player types commands, which usually consist of combinations of nouns and verbs (e.g., "Take a flower", "Talk to a man", etc.)
