Synopsis

The events of Oni take place in 2032 or later. The game world is a dystopia, an Earth so polluted that little is left habitable. To resolve international economic crises, all nations have come together into one entity, the Global Coalition Government. The government is Orwellian, telling the population that areas that are actually dangerously toxic are nature reserves, and using its police force, known publicly as the Technological Crimes Task Force (TCTF), to suppress opposition. The player character, codenamed Konoko (voiced by Amanda Winn-Lee), full name later given as Mai Hasegawa, begins the game working for the TCTF. Soon, she learns that her employers are keeping secrets about her past from her. She turns against them as she embarks on a quest for self-discovery. The player learns more about his family and his origins while fighting both the TCTF and its greatest enemy, the equally monolithic criminal organization called the Syndicate. At the game's climax, Konoko uncovers a Syndicate plan to cause a catastrophic malfunction of the Atmospheric Conversion Centers, the air processing plants necessary to keep most of the world's population alive. She partially succeeds in foiling the plot, thus saving part of humanity.
